Here at the Williamsburg Bridge Magnet School for Communication and Mixed Media Arts, we place an emphasis on providing Project-Based Learning opportunities for our students in all modern forms of communication. We believe in providing students with an appreciation of a wide variety of artistic experiences in order to develop the whole child.
Making use of Communication and various forms of Media, as well as Fine and Performance Arts, we infuse all of the strands of STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics- into our students' school day. Please read below to learn about many of our exciting Magnet opportunities!
Spanish Dual Language
Students in grades Kindergarten through Fourth have the opportunity to join our Spanish Dual Language Program. Our teachers in this program are fluent in both English and Spanish and spend half the day teaching in each language. Students do not need to have any prior experience with the Spanish language to succeed in this program as their young brains are able to understand new languages quickly and easily!
Early Morning Readers
New York Cares Volunteers support third grade and ELL students with their reading and comprehension skills in our Early Morning Readers program. The program is comprised of weekly, hour long sessions where students have the opportunity to work one on one with a volunteer focused on helping them achieve their individual reading goals. At the end of the year, students and volunteers celebrate their accomplishments with a party!
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade students have the opportunity to practice reciprocal reading strategies and engage in literature circles through the application of the Generation Ready curriculum program. Students are empowered to play the role of teacher as they lead their classmates in small group activities while improving their reading and public speaking skills.
Rosie's Theater Kids
Fifth Graders participate in interactive artistic workshops to develop performing arts skills. A team of dedicated teachers and performers work with our students to give them in-depth exposure to the theatrical arts in the heart of the city where Broadway was born!
The Leader In Me
The Leader in Me is Franklin Covey’s whole school transformation process which teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader!
Center for Arts Education
An Annenberg Foundation grant that provides grades K-5 students with weekly music classes in a 20 week program. Program teachers select music that aligns with each grade's project based learning curriculum unit, providing students with a holistic view of of the topics they are studying in class.
Paley Media Center
An 8 Week Residency with the Paley Center for Media where 3rd grade students travel to the center, and Paley teaching artists visit our school. Together, students create fictional stories and bring them to life through the use of sound effects and various production tools.
Wellness & Creative Movement
Our full time wellness teacher works with all students to practice mindfulness through stretching, breathing, and relaxation exercises, addressing our schools focus on supporting the whole child.
Theater Arts with Mrs. Kate is an exciting introduction to the wide world of performing arts! The year long program, this year with our second and third graders, focuses on building valuable skills in public speaking, confident storytelling, stage presentation, creative play and movement, as well as literacy and collaborative learning.
Family Health Challenge
Second graders participate in an eight-week community-based overweight and obesity prevention program, where doctors lead lessons in the classroom to introduce healthy behaviors each week.
NYU Lutheran Dental
Our on-site dental clinic provides full services to all students throughout the school day. Students can make an appointment and visit our dentist free of charge for check ups, cleanings and orthodontist referrals.
On-site Vision screenings are offered to students, family, and staff twice a year and children can receive free glasses.
Weekly health and nutrition education workshops on food preparation are provided for students and parents.
